| Window | Reading |
|---|---|
| Too low | Under 20 cfs |
| Low and fishable | 20 - 50 cfs |
| Prime | 50 - 200 cfs |
| High and fishable (falling only) | 200 - 450 cfs |
| Blown out | Over 450 cfs, or rising |
More silt and sand than the shale creeks, so Conneaut goes brown instead of grey-green and stays off-color longer. Fish it on color, not just numbers.
The shore's slow clearer among the big creeks: PFBC classes it Large (2-4 days to fishable after a rain event). It also comes IN late - mid-October medians are still summer-low.
How the bands were set: Angler/guide consensus bands anchored to USGS station 04213000 (90 years of record; mid-October median daily flow 27 cfs, late-November median about 180 cfs - this river wakes up late).

Fall (Oct - Nov)This season
The water: Comes in last on the shore: summer-low through mid-October (median 27 cfs), waking up with late-fall rains (late-Nov median about 180 cfs).
Fish present: Steelhead building from late October; strays earlier at the harbor.
How to fish it: Harbor and lowest river first; follow the color drop upstream day by day.
Winter (Dec - Feb)
The water: Big, cold, and slow to change; ice in the harbor and on slow edges.
Fish present: Steelhead in the deep river pools.
How to fish it: Float-and-egg game in the long pools; fish the warmest hours.
Spring (Mar - Apr)
The water: The last big push of fresh fish, plus the sucker run; stays fishable when small creeks blow because it clears on a delay.
Fish present: Fresh and dropback steelhead; upper-river stocked trout.
How to fish it: Sucker Spawn in the riffles; shiners for dropbacks; nymphs up top for trout.
Summer (May - Aug)
The water: Warm, silty river; the fishery turns warmwater.
Fish present: Smallmouth, walleye, muskie, catfish in the lower river and harbor.
How to fish it: Bigger flies and hardware; dawn and dusk; fish current seams and harbor structure.

Weather & conditions playbook
The row matching the live flow band is highlighted when the gauge answers.
| Condition | What changes | Tactics | Flies | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| High and off-color (over 450 cfs) | The river goes full chocolate and stays there for days - it is the slowest clearer on the shore. | Do not make the drive on the spike. Calendar the drop instead: Conneaut comes in as other creeks are finishing. | First-green-water eggs and buggers when it finally drops. | Stay home now; plan for day 3-4 of the drop. |
| Prime green and falling (50-200 cfs) | Big-river green: long pools full of moving fish. | Float fish the pool heads, swing the tails. Cover the between-bridge water. | Eggs, beads, shiner patterns. | Go - the shore's best big-water window. |
| Low and clear (under 20 cfs) | Summer mode even in fall until the rains come; fish hold in the harbor and lowest pools. | Fish the harbor and first river mile; small and natural in the river. | Single eggs, small nymphs, midges. | Harbor yes; upper river wait. |
| Cold snap | Harbor ice and lethargic fish in the deepest pools. | Midday, deep, slow. | Small eggs and stoneflies. | Short sessions. |
| Warm rain in fall | Because Conneaut wakes up late, a November warm rain is its season opener. | Fish the lower river as it rises into the windows; upper PA water two days later. | Eggs and bright streamers. | Go - this is its starting gun. |
| Post-front bright | Fish sit deep in the silt-green pools under the banks. | Deep floats, shade lines, first light. | Natural eggs, stonefly nymphs. | Fishable. |
