WindowReading
Too lowWalnut gauge under 15 cfs and Crooked gin clear at the road
Low and fishableWalnut 15 - 50 cfs; Crooked fishable a day behind
PrimeWalnut 50 - 150 and falling; Crooked greens 24+ hours later
High and fishableOnly the softest edges while Walnut runs 150 - 250
Blown outWalnut over 250, or Crooked milky brown at Glosky Road

Expect a milky tea stain rather than shale grey-green. If it looks like chocolate milk at the road crossing, it will not be right today.

Plan 36-72 hours after high water. The rule that works: when Walnut drops into prime, put Crooked on the calendar for tomorrow and the day after.

How the bands were set: Crooked Creek has NO stream gauge (USGS discontinued monitoring; water-quality sites only). Windows are read off the Walnut Creek gauge one basin east and shifted a day - Crooked's flat, wooded basin holds color 36-72 hours after a rain, the slowest clear on the shore (guide consensus).

Season playbook

Resolved from today's date — the current season is highlighted. On the live site this re-resolves in your browser.

Fall (Oct - Nov)This season

The water: Needs a real rain to bring fish up; once in, color lingers for days - which also means it holds a fishable stain longer.

Fish present: Steelhead (stocked plus a wild component).

How to fish it: Wait for the Walnut gauge to prime, then fish Crooked the next day. Jam-to-jam pocket picking.

Winter (Dec - Feb)

The water: Small, cold, often locked in the slowest bends.

Fish present: Holdover steelhead in the deep jams.

How to fish it: Short sessions, deepest cover, tiny patterns.

Spring (Mar - Apr)

The water: Suckers in the riffles; steelhead spread thin but catchable.

Fish present: Steelhead, suckers, resident creek fish waking up.

How to fish it: Sucker Spawn and small nymphs; soft hackles in the afternoon.

Summer (May - Aug)

The water: Low, shaded, and quiet - an upper-creek small-water game.

Fish present: Resident trout and creek fish.

How to fish it: Light tackle, terrestrials, dawn and dusk. Leave warm lower water alone.

On now — hatch & forage for October

  • Steelhead egg drift — Small Glo-Bugs, beads, single eggs
  • Emerald shiners (mouth only) — Small shiner patterns
  • Crayfish and creek minnows — Mini buggers, small crayfish patterns

ConditionWhat changesTacticsFliesVerdict
High and off-colorCrooked takes the longest to come back - milky for 36-72 hours while other creeks clear.Fish somewhere else today; circle Crooked for the tail of the cycle. When it finally stains green: small bright eggs.Stay home - schedule it, do not chase it.
Prime stain and falling (a day behind Walnut)Tea-colored and dropping: the creek's best, briefest window.Jam to jam, one good drift each.Small eggs, pheasant tails, mini buggers.Go - this window is why you own this guide.
Low and clearThe creek's default state: spooky, technical fish.Long leaders, small patterns, first light, no wading noise.Midges, small nymphs, single eggs.Hard but honest fishing.
Cold snapSmall water locks up fast; shelf ice on the bends.Deepest jam holes at midday, or skip it.Tiny eggs and midges.Marginal - Walnut and Elk are better cold bets.
Warm rain in fallThe entry ticket: fish push up on the rise and stay catchable for days on the stain.Arrive on day two of the drop, not day one.Eggs and small buggers.Go on the delayed drop.
Post-front brightClear and bright on a small creek: fish bury in the jams.Fish the wood itself - drifts tight to cover, shade all day.Natural nymphs.Fishable in the cover.
